AI voice reference checking, pay per candidate
ResearchedRefChecker
Australian-built reference-checking tool whose AI phones the referee, holds the conversation, and writes a transcribed, scored report — with chat and form as fallbacks — at a flat US$3.25 per candidate with no subscription.
The short answer
- Best for
- ANZ desks on JobAdder or RecruitOnline that want spoken reference checks without a subscription

- Price
- US$3.25 (A$5.00) per candidate, two referees included; no subscription

Why these assessments
- Recruitment fitStrong
- Employment references are the core case and the ATS integrations are recruitment systems, though the vendor also sells the same check for tenants, volunteers and trades.
- Ease of useUnknown
- The four-step flow (request, candidate adds referees, AI calls, report) is simple on paper, and a self-serve signup exists, but we have not used it and no independent user has reviewed it anywhere we found.
- ImplementationStrong
- Self-serve account, card on file, no contract; JobAdder and RecruitOnline connect via standard OAuth, and there is a Chrome extension to start a check from any ATS page.
- Price transparencyStrong
- One published price per candidate, two add-ons, five named billing currencies, GST/VAT excluded — the whole cost is on one page. Only volume pricing is by enquiry.
- Value for moneyFair
- US$3.25 for a two-referee spoken check with a written report is far below what a recruiter's own time on the phone costs, but the product is unproven by anyone independent and referee take-up of an AI call is the unknown that decides whether the money is well spent.
- ScalabilityFair
- Pure per-candidate pricing scales linearly with no packs or tiers, which suits volume; but the ATS coverage is two named systems plus Zapier/webhooks, and enterprise assurance (SOC 2) is not there yet.

The SourcrLab bottom line
A cheap, narrowly focused product with one genuinely different idea — the AI holds a spoken reference conversation instead of emailing a form — priced low enough that the risk of trying it is close to nil. Everything around that core is early: the company is a sibling of an Australian voice-AI vendor rather than a standalone firm with a public track record, five of the six advertised check types are 'coming', legal pages are drafts, and there is no independent review anywhere we could find. Worth a small live pilot; not yet a platform decision.
Best fit
ANZ recruitment desks on JobAdder or RecruitOnline that check references for most placements and want to stop playing phone tag: at US$3.25 per candidate (two referees included) with no minimum, the cost of trying it on a handful of live checks is a rounding error, and the report comes back with transcript, would-rehire signal, strengths and flags already written.
Think twice if
Anyone whose referees are unlikely to take a call from an AI, teams that need enterprise assurance today (SOC 2 is 'on the roadmap', the privacy policy is marked draft), or a buyer outside ANZ whose ATS is not JobAdder, RecruitOnline or something Zapier and webhooks can reach — Bullhorn and Workday are listed as coming, not live.
SourcrLab assessment
Everything on this page comes from the vendor's own pages, checked on the dates below. SourcrLab has not used this product in real recruitment work, so you will not find a first-hand opinion here.
Why choose RefChecker?
The AI talks to the referee instead of emailing them a form
The core product is a spoken conversation: RefChecker's assistant phones the referee, runs a natural-language reference conversation, and the recording and transcript are attached to the report. Chat and a plain form exist as fallbacks 'if they'd rather not talk', not as the primary channel — the opposite of most reference tools, which are questionnaire-first.
One number on the pricing page, and it is small
US$3.25 (A$5.00, NZ$5.50, £2.50, C$4.50) per candidate covers up to two referees on any channel, invites and reminders, and the structured report. The only add-ons are an extra referee (+US$1.60) and call recording (+US$1.00). Card required, no subscription, no packs, no lock-in — so a desk can run a real pilot for the price of a coffee.
The report is written for a recruiter, not a compliance file
Each check yields a full transcript with audio, a would-rehire answer, key strengths, areas to develop, flags and an overall indicator, plus what the vendor calls a tone indicator. Reports can be shared, and the referee is sent a copy of their own reference — a small detail that helps with consent and with referees who worry about what was written down.
Fits an ANZ agency stack without a project
JobAdder is a live two-way integration (pull candidates in, push completed reports back), RecruitOnline is a native connection because both products come from the same company, and Zapier plus a check.completed webhook cover the rest. There is also a Chrome extension that reads the candidate name, email and phone from whatever ATS page is open and starts a check from there.
You can hear the product before you sign up
The homepage offers a live demo call: enter an Australian mobile number and the AI phones you and runs a short reference check with you playing the referee. It is limited to one call per number and AU mobiles only, but it is a rare case of a vendor letting a buyer experience the referee's side before any commitment.
Main trade-offs
The whole premise depends on referees taking a call from an AI
The vendor itself acknowledges that 'some referees prefer not to take a call' and offers chat and a form 'so a check never stalls'. What it does not publish is any completion or pick-up rate. If a meaningful share of a desk's referees decline the voice call, the product degrades to a questionnaire tool — at which point the AI-voice premise, the reason to choose it, is gone.
Five of the six advertised checks are 'coming', not live
The 'one platform, every check' pitch — identity verification, right to work, licence & registry (AHPRA, ASIC), police checks, AML & sanctions rolling up into one report — is a roadmap. Only voice reference checks are marked live. Bullhorn and Workday integrations are likewise 'coming'. Buy it for what it does today: reference checks into JobAdder, RecruitOnline or Zapier.
Early-stage on every axis that is not the product itself
The privacy policy and terms of service both carry the banner 'Draft — pending legal review'. SOC 2 Type II is described as 'on our roadmap ahead of serious enterprise sales'. There is no about page, no named founders, no customer logos, and no listing on G2 or Capterra. The company behind it, VoxApp Ltd, is an Australian voice-AI vendor that names RefChecker and RecruitOnline as sibling products; that is reassuring on the technology, less so as evidence of a standalone track record.
ANZ-centric in the ways that matter to a European desk
The demo call accepts Australian mobiles only; the two named ATS integrations are ANZ agency systems; the licence registries named are AHPRA and ASIC; billing currencies are USD, AUD, NZD, GBP and CAD — no EUR. Data residency is stated as 'architected for AU, UK, EU and US data pinning' with the sibling company's storage listed as AWS Australia or the EU, but which region a new EU tenant actually lands in is not documented. Multi-language voice is claimed ('AU, UK, US and more') without a language list.
Pricing and buying reality
US$3.25 (A$5.00) per candidate, two referees included — no subscription
- One price per candidate: US$3.25 / A$5.00 / NZ$5.50 / £2.50 / C$4.50, billed in your market's currency; prices exclude GST/VAT where applicable
- Includes up to two referees on any channel (AI voice call, web call, chat or form), invites and reminders, and the structured report with tone indicator
- Add-ons per check: extra referee beyond the two included +US$1.60; call recording +US$1.00
- Card required, no subscription, no packs, no lock-in; checks are billed per completed check under the terms of service
- Identity, right-to-work, licence and police checks are 'priced per check as they launch' — no figures yet
- Earlier readings of this page ('from $2.50 a check', phone call as an add-on) no longer match the live site; the vendor has repriced to a flat per-candidate rate with voice included
What we do not know
- Volume pricing — the contact page invites enquiries about it but nothing is published
- Whether an incomplete check (referee never reached on any channel) is billed
- Whether the free demo call extends to any free production checks
- Whether EUR billing will be added, or EU buyers pay in USD or GBP

How it fits your stack
Works with
- JobAdder (two-way, live), RecruitOnline (native, same company), Zapier, webhooks (check.completed and other events), any ATS via OAuth; a Chrome extension starts checks from an open ATS/CRM page
Likely replaces
- A recruiter's own reference calls and the notes typed up afterwards; questionnaire-based reference tools
May overlap with
- HiPeople, Crosschq and other form-first reference-check tools on the core job
- VoxApp itself, which sells reference checks as one of many voice-agent use cases inside RecruitOnline
Check before buying
- Run ten live checks and measure how many referees actually complete the voice call versus falling back to chat or form — the vendor publishes no completion rate
- Ask in writing which region your tenant's recordings and transcripts are stored in, and for the finished (non-draft) privacy policy and DPA
- Confirm the languages the voice agent actually supports for your referees; 'multi-language' is claimed without a list
RefChecker vs alternatives
Products a buyer would genuinely put next to this one, with the reason you would pick each instead.
Choose HiPeople if you want form-based reference checks from a vendor with SOC 2 Type II and a large independent review record (4.8/5 on Capterra), and can live without a voice call — but expect quote-only pricing.
Consider Crosschq if you want reference data tied to quality-of-hire analytics across the whole hiring funnel, rather than a standalone per-check tool.
Choose Checkr if what you actually need is the criminal-record, identity and right-to-work screening that RefChecker lists as 'coming' — Checkr sells that today, though not the reference conversation.
