Applicant Tracking System (ATS)
Definition
Software that automates the hiring process by managing job postings, applications, and candidate data in one central system.
An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is the backbone of modern recruiting. It stores candidate information, tracks where each applicant is in the pipeline, and automates repetitive tasks like screening resumes and scheduling interviews.
Most ATS platforms also integrate with job boards, allowing recruiters to post to multiple sites with a single click. Advanced systems use AI to rank candidates, detect duplicates, and provide analytics on time-to-fill and source effectiveness.
For small teams, a simple ATS with free plans (like Recruitee or Breezy HR) may suffice. Enterprise organizations typically need multi-region support, SSO, and deep HRIS integrations.
